Auto taller Alcalà: bikes look like brand new again
Using dry ice for the cleaning process of industrial machines and vehicles is not something new, but the owners of Auto Taller Alcalà, located in Girona, figured that there are many more purposes for ‘dry ice cleaning’.
Dry ice washing, also known as dry ice blasting or CO2 blasting, is a cleaning and surface preparation technique that uses dry ice pellets (solid carbon dioxide) accelerated by compressed air to clean a variety of surfaces. It’s a non-abrasive, environmentally friendly, and highly effective method for removing contaminants, coatings, and residues from a wide range of materials without leaving behind any secondary waste.
As the properties of dry ice include being a strong degreaser, and as a result of the temperature difference between dry ice and the surface of the bike, the air has enough kinetic energy to detach the dirtiness by itself.
Taller Alcalà has applied this technique to bikes in its cleaning process, and the results are surprising. As they are using a substance with a low sublimation temperature that leaves no liquid residue, dry ice becomes the best asset when cleaning the bike parts that need more maintenance or the motor of e-bikes.
