Beach, gastronomy, spa, culture and great routes - Hostal Empúries has it all

Located on the shores of l’Escala, Hostal Empúries is the perfect starting point for some of the best runs in Catalonia. The area around this sports-friendly hotel offers incredible options for those who like to enjoy their days to the fullest. The hotel is not only sports-focused, it is also particularly strong in its commitment to sustainable tourism.

“Hostal Empúries is proud to be a pioneer in sustainability”, says Guillermo Arquer, manager of the hotel in l’Escala. “In 2010 we were the first hotel in all of Europe to obtain the LEED Gold certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which endorsed our early commitment to energy efficiency, responsible design and positive impact on the environment. Today, we continue to lead the way by committing to B Corp certification.”

Sustainability and running

The hotel manager continues: “B Corp certification assesses companies on their social and environmental impact, and on the transparency of their business model. For us, it means much more than recognition; it is the way to demonstrate our commitment to responsible and ethical practices. This process reinforces our vision that sustainability is an obligation for any company that wants to contribute to global environmental well-being.”

“By becoming a B Corp business, we join a global network of companies working for positive change, which aligns with our mission to inspire our guests and collaborators to value the positive impact of their actions.”

Arquer sees a clear connection between sustainability and running, as exploring the area running is a pure form of active tourism. A bike (only) path which leads directly from the hotel to the nearest beach reflects the importance of this type of tourism, while the hotel is also easily reachable by motorised vehicles and has its own safe parking.

Relaxation and recovery

Not only is the Mediterranean Sea just a step away, but the hotel is also conveniently and safely accessible from this bike path. Whether you’re heading to Sant Martí d’Empuriès, for instance, running, or go even further following the coast line, this scenic stretch of asphalt marks the perfect start and finish line for any running adventure.

The hotel’s prime location provides stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, visible from the moment you step into the lobby. Recently renovated, Hostal Empúries features 55 rooms, a gym, a spa, a restaurant, a beach bar, and extensive sports facilities to not only train cardio outside but also strength inside to relax and recover afterwards. Open year-round, the hotel ensures that its spa and restaurant remain available to guests in all seasons.

The spa offers the perfect environment for post-run relaxation and recovery. Guests can enjoy a heated recreational pool with jets, a swimming pool, a steam bath, a dry sauna, a bi-thermal steaming sensation shower, a solarium zone, and a dry relaxation area with water beds, reading nooks, and herbal infusions. The plethora of amenities available is one of the reasons why Hostal Empúries is a trusted choice for many sportsmen, also triathletes, to return regularly.

The soft golden sand of Platja de Portitxol and its calm Mediterranean waters, plus the charming coastal town of l’Escala – famous for its Greek and Roman ruins and fishing heritage, make the place a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. Managed by a passionate sportsman, the hotel is dedicated to ensuring an exceptional – and importantly a sustainable – experience for guests with sportive ambitions who, in addition, like to make most out of each single day.
